Something New Mexico High Schools MUST Change!

Every year in May I get phone calls and emails from angry parents.  They go something like this,

"My child (insert name) won't be able to participate in graduation because of the state (insert spring sport) final is at the same time!"

Last weekend, some of the state team tennis matches had to be moved to accommodate graduation.  Kids were changing in the parking lot, stepping onto the court and having to compete without much preparation.  It's not fair to the kids.  The schools must do something about it.  That's right, the schools.. not the NMAA.  It's not up to the NMAA to try and schedule the state events around EVERY school's graduation.  That would be impossible!  Right now, the New Mexico Activities Association has a 5 year calendar already posted on their website.  Schools know when the state spring finals in tennis, track, baseball, softball and golf will be in the year 2012.  It's up to the schools to adjust their graduations to accommodate their kids.

One suggestion might be to move back the state finals from the second week in May, but that wouldn't make spring sports coaches very happy.  Baseball and softball coaches already play a couple weeks without a lot of their starters at the beginning of each season because those same kids are participating in a winter sport like basketball.

Growing up in California, I never saw this problem (for kids to have to choose between graduation and participating at state) because we didn't graduate until June.  Since the high school calendar in New Mexico is different, I think we will always run into some conflict.  It's up to the schools to minimize the conflict.  I don't think kids should ever have to choose between the two!
