At a time when Lobo fans should be concentrating on spring football, the women's golf team heading to regionals or the Lobo baseball team in a tie for first place in the conference, instead the hot topic is Steve Alford's contract. It doesn't matter whether you pick up the paper and read "Sports Speak Up" or answer the phones here at the KOB sports office, you get Lobo fans complaining about the man's salary. The 9-hundred thousand dollar a year salary is the going rate for a good college coach. When Ritchie McKay was replaced Lobo fans wanted a big name, well guess what, you got one. With that big name comes a big paycheck. I could understand the concern if this was last season with no UNM stats to go by, but let me refresh your memory. Alford led a Lobo team that finished in last place the year before and took them to 24 wins and that is without their second leading scorer. They won 11 games in conference and have only done that twice in 10 years. Next season's recruiting class is rated 9th best in DI college basketball by ESPN. For the fans that say, "Iowa wanted him out." I say GOOD. Ask the 18,018 that saw the Lobos pound UNLV in the Pit on March the 4th if they think he is worth the money. The bottom line is you get what you pay for and right now I think the man is worth the money.
