Monsoon rain washes out roads in northern New Mexico

NAMBE, N.M. — Communities in northern New Mexico are preparing for more rain, while still reeling from flooding earlier this week.

In Nambe, people are saying the monsoon storms have been more intense than previous years. Flood waters this week knocked out phones and internet, and washed out roads.

While some said they’re grateful for the moisture, they’re also preparing for the worst.

The National Weather Service recommends having a plan in place for a flood – putting together an emergency kit with first aid supplies, water, food and charged electronics. They also advise the public to follow updates online, on TV, and the radio.

Weather officials said if you’re inside, don’t go into rooms where water reaches any electrical outlets or cords. If you’re outside, avoid flood waters and don’t try to cross any ditches or arroyos – even if driving.

Finally, if it gets too dangerous, leave. Get to higher ground or a local evacuation site.
