Man fatally shot by APD at West Side gas station

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man was shot and killed by Albuquerque police officers who confronted him at a gas station late Sunday night.

Around 11:15 p.m. Sunday, officers were called the Valero at Coors and Quail. Officers believed that a man was intoxicated inside a car parked at the gas station.

“Officers had the individual step out of the vehicle and the officers were speaking with the individual,” said Harold Medina, Albuquerque Police Department chief. “The individual started to smoke, so they asked the individual to step away, approach the sidewalk.”

However, Medina said the person – later identified as 27-year-old Keshawn Thomas – got back inside of the car. That’s when some sort of confrontation happened and multiple officers fired shots. Thomas was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

“It’s still too early in the investigation to know exactly what happened,” Medina said.

According to the chief, police did recover a gun on scene that did not belong to officers.

Police said they are in the process of reviewing video to see what conversations took place and what led up to the shooting.
