DURANGO, CO- La Plata County residents who are 65 years or older can now use the transit system to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
"When a senior books ride, that will dispatch one of our drivers to their home, and they’ll help them if they’re in a wheelchair or walker, the driver will help them get on to the bus and then drive them straight to the vaccination clinic," said Sarah Hill, assistant director of transportation for the City of Durango.
If a patient has mobility issues, a health care worker will vaccinate them on the bus. This special transit started in February with CARES Act funding.
"With this special funding and for the purpose of getting seniors connected to vaccines, we have expanded our services to the entire La Plata County," Hill said.
The bus can take up to two senors to the vaccination sites.
"We just ask that they give 24 hours in advance of their appointment to schedule a ride– just to make sure we accommodate everyone," Hill said.
