HOBBS, N.M. – A suspect was fatally shot by police and another is on the loose as a Hobbs police officer remains hospitalized after a shooting Wednesday night.

According to Hobbs police, an officer made contact, around 10:30 p.m., with a black Dodge dually pickup truck stopped on Turner Drive and partially in the entrance of the Valero gas station.

Police say Daniel Ramirez, 27, evaded police on foot and ran toward the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot. They also said gunfire was exchanged between Ramirez and the officers during the pursuit, injuring an officer and Ramirez.

The officer was taken to Covenant Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was also taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A second suspect, 28-year-old Janessa Perez – of Hobbs – tried to flee the area in a police vehicle, while handcuffed, as officers rendered aid to the male suspect. Perez made it a short distance before crashing the vehicle into the bank drive-thru and fleeing on foot.

Perez is on the loose at this time. Hobbs police are encouraging people to not approach Perez but to contact local law enforcement with any information regarding her whereabouts.

Police also say there is no immediate danger to the public. The New Mexico State Police investigation is active and ongoing. It is unconfirmed if either suspect was armed.
