State Police: Suspect fatally shot in Edgewood, officers uninjured

EDGEWOOD, N.M. – New Mexico State Police is investigating a shooting in Edgewood where a suspect was fatally shot.

According to NMSP, Torrance County deputies responded to a vehicle stuck in the snow on County Road A102 near Monica Lane in Edgewood. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies made contact with a man and a woman. State police said the man, later identified as 34-year-old Andrew Castellano of Las Cruces, reportedly reached into his waistband and brandished a firearm.

Authorities said Castellano pointed the firearm at a deputy and fired, but the deputy was not hit. At that time, deputies on scene returned fire, and Castellano was struck at least once. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

No deputies were injured. The names of the deputies involved will not be released by New Mexico State Police.

The investigation is active and ongoing – details are limited.
