ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two Albuquerque High School students were shot at Santa Barbara Martineztown Park Friday.
An Albuquerque High School student told KOB 4 that he and his friends went to the park during their lunch break when a drive-by shooting broke out. The students that escaped the gunfire later embraced their family members at the Lovelace emergency room.
According to APD, a freshman student was jumped by two other students in the parking lot of the school. The students agreed to continue the fight in the park during lunch. The freshman who was jumped brought two of his friends to the park as backup. However, instead of a fight, a silver vehicle with an unknown subject fired several rounds – shooting the freshman’s two friends.
"I can’t even think straight," said Jose Ponce, the uncle of one of the shooting victims. "I was just nervous making sure my nephews were OK. When I heard my oldest nephew got shot, I just lost it."
Nearby schools were ordered to shelter in place after the shooting.
Police said both shooting victims are expected to survive and detectives have tracked down and secured the vehicle related to this shooting. However, the suspect is still unknown.
