Police charge suspect with DWI street racing crash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police say a drunk street racer crashed into a crowd of people Saturday night. Four bystanders were hurt with two of them seriously injured.

This happened Saturday night at the popular Taco Bus food truck location on Central Avenue. 

KOB 4 spoke with a woman who says the food truck draws a big crowd almost every night.

“It was a Saturday night, there was tons of people out here,” said Destiny Carrillo, a nearby resident. 

Carrillo had just left the taco truck, when minutes later the popular spot turned into chaos. 

“First was we seen some kids running down our block, and I was like, ‘Huh, that’s odd.’ And so I started like actually noticing, and I was like, ‘Oh snap, like, this just happened in the bus, the front of the bus was hit.’ The pole was down. It was pretty intense,” said Carrillo. 

According to APD, three cars were street racing on Central late Saturday night. 

APD says one of the cars hit an ART bus divider and that caused it to plow into the line of people at the taco truck. 

Carrillo says she’s lucky to be OK. 

“It was traumatizing. I called my fiancé, and I was like, ‘Babe, we could have just died.’ And he was like, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘There’s a big crash, like these people are on the ground,’” Carrillo said. 

APD says four people were hit by the car. Three were taken to the hospital — two suffered critical injuries and the other patient is stable.

Carrillo says scenes like this are common here. 

“There’s always accidents, making our power go out right here on 47th and Central at that corner. They’re always knocking that pole down, hitting that poll there, and knocking the whole power out in everything,” said Carrillo. 

APD arrested 18-year-old Abraham Corral Alvarez in connection to the crash. He’s facing three counts of DWI resulting in great bodily harm.

According to APD, the other drivers involved fled the scene. 

Carrillo says the neighborhood is now hoping for accountability. 

“I just hope that the people on the ground were OK. That’s what I really hope, and if anybody fled or anything, if anybody has any information on those to just let authorities know,” said Carrillo.
