Suspect flees following police shooting in SE Albuquerque

*UPDATE: Police arrested 34-year-old Pablo Abreu-Peña on a felony drug warrant. He is also the suspect in the shooting involving officers. Detectives found him Saturday at 441 Grove Street SE.*

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A suspect is still on the run after police shot him in southeast Albuquerque. Police say officers were patrolling around Rhode Island Street when they noticed suspicious activity.

According to APD, the suspect – who has not been identified – was spraypainting a tire on a car. That’s when officers went over and noticed it also didn’t have plates. Before they could ask any questions, they say the suspect took off running.

Officers chased him on foot, through a nearby apartment complex, and that’s when they say he pulled out a gun.

APD spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos says it’s too early to tell who fired what rounds, but they do know one officer fired several rounds at the suspect.

“The suspect has not been located at this time,” Gallegos said. “We have spent several hours looking for the suspect. We do believe he is possibly injured. We have evidence to suggest he was injured, but he has not been located.”

No officers were hurt during the shooting. Police say the suspect dropped his gun and jumped over a fence to get away.

APD also contacted all nearby hospitals to be on the lookout if anyone comes in with a gunshot wound.

Police have not released a description of the suspect yet. Investigators are also working to find more information about the car.

“The possibility was that the car was stolen,” Gallegos said. “It has not been reported stolen at this point, but trying to determine who owns the car, where this car came from, what this person’s connection to the car was.”

Officers are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call 242-COPS.
