ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Three Albuquerque firefighters were in court Thursday. They’re each facing rape charges.
A woman says she was sexually assaulted by the three men last month. Now, prosecutors are pushing to have them held behind bars.
Aden Heyman, Anthony Martin and Angel Portillo all appeared in court by video Thursday. All three men are charged with second-degree rape.
Back on July 15, a woman accused the three firefighters of raping her at an apartment on Menaul in northeast Albuquerque.
She told police she attended a golf event with Martin and Portillo earlier that day. Martin reportedly invited her to swim at the pool at his apartment. Heyman reportedly joined the group at that point.
A criminal complaint says they were drinking heavily.
The woman told investigators she “lost a couple of hours” and woke up in a bed with the men raping her. She told police Heyman was even “coaching them on how to rape.”
The three firefighters were arrested this week following an investigation that spanned more than a month.
The hearings were brief, and the firefighters did not speak. Prosecutors filed Thursday to have all them men held in jail until trial.
“Which is disappointing because there’s no indication he’s a threat, he’s been out since the middle of July. But I understand that because of that motion this court does not have jurisdiction to consider conditions of release at this time,” said Heather LeBlanc, Portillo’s attorney.
Attorneys for all three men told KOB 4 they believe their clients are innocent.
AFR Chief Emily Jaramillo told us the department is doing an internal investigation.
All three men were placed on administrative leave. An APD spokesperson said Anthony Martin has since retired.
