‘Tag Your Tots’ helps parents find kids lost in crowded places

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For any parent, losing their kid in a crowd is the worst scenario imaginable, but New Mexico State Police has a tool to help.
State Police has used “Tag Your Tots” for years to help parents in places with large crowds.
This year, they have brought that back to the New Mexico State Fair. After all, between the petting zoo, the pig races, tasty foods… it can be easy for a kid to wander off there.
“There is usually an incident almost every year where a child will wander off or get separated from their parents. Like we say, there are 50 state cops at any given time,” said Ray Wilson with New Mexico State Police.
State Police has a “Tag Your Tots” booth set up at the fair. Here’s how it works.
“You’ll get a band for your loved one. They’ll have all their information out there. So, if they get away from you, we will be able to reconnect you guys with your families and loved ones,” Wilson explained.
Officials say taking a picture of your loved one from that day may also be helpful if they wander off.
“We teach the kids, when they get their bands, if you do get lost, go up to an officer and show them your band. That way, they get reconnected with their loved one. It’s usually a pretty speedy process,” Wilson said.
Keep in mind, this isn’t just for young kids, it’s for older adults too.
“We just want everyone to come out here and have a good time,” he said.
