BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. — Bernalillo County deputies’ search of a now-condemned home on the sheriff’s office’s radar turned up over 50 dogs during an operation Wednesday.

Property owner Douglas Reames is now in custody, facing felony animal cruelty charges.

According to BCSO, they had been trying to work with Reames for two and a half years. He reportedly cooperated at first, then didn’t – elevating the situation to a point of community concern in July.

Officials have seized 54 dogs from the now-condemned home and expect to seize ten more.

The dogs are as young as two days and most are feral, ill and/or have tested positive for parvovirus and coccidia.

The socialized and healthy-appearing dogs are in a 10-day quarantine period and will eventually be made available for adoption afterward.

Bernalillo County Animal Care Services officials say they are now over capacity. They’re asking for the public’s help in providing foster homes for healthy animals.
