New Mexico State Police say two of their officers opened fire on a suspect, killing him in northeast Albuquerque Friday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police say two of their officers opened fire on a suspect, killing him in northeast Albuquerque Friday.

NMSP says the shooting happened at the Pavilions Apartments, near Academy and Lowell. The area is just west of Tramway.

Investigators said they were called to the apartment complex to investigate a previous incident involving the suspect, 35-year-old Francisco Hernandez, and the Sandia Police Department. Sandia police officers were reportedly involved in an altercation with Hernandez and issued a warrant for him for aggravated battery on a police officer, aggravated fleeing a police officer, and tampering with evidence.

NMSP was able to track Hernandez to the Pavilions Apartments in Albuquerque, where officers found him in a vehicle Friday. According to state police, Hernandez attempted to flee before crashing into a tree in the parking lot. He then fled on foot through the complex.

NMSP says at some point during that pursuit, Hernandez brandished a firearm in the direction of officers. At least two officers fired their weapons, striking Hernandez. He was pronounced dead on scene by OMI.

According to NMSP, no officers were injured.
