Alabama man charged in Eddy County homicide
EDDY COUNTY N.M. — Authorities have arrested an Alabama man suspected of a Sunday night murder.
Tevin Devonta O’Brien Morrissette, 29, is accused of shooting and killing Avery Kadeem Weathers, 33, during an argument at an oil field south of Carlsbad.
According to the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:54 p.m., after receiving a call about an unconscious man. While heading to the scene, court records state that deputies and first responders encountered Morrissette and another man as they were driving Weathers to the hospital in a pickup truck.
Weathers was placed in an ambulance and taken to the hospital, where he later died from his wounds.
Morrissette sustained injuries in the fight. He was charged with second-degree murder and is being held at the Eddy County Detention Center.
The district attorney’s office has filed a motion to hold Morrissette in pretrial detention. Court records show a Friday morning hearing will determine whether or not Morrisette will be held without bond while he awaits trial.
