NMSP: 77-year-old man fatally shot after shooting Quay County deputy

TUCUMCARI, N.M. — A Quay County deputy shot and killed a 77-year-old man who New Mexico State Police said shot and wounded another deputy.

This happened Tuesday morning south of Tucumcari. Around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, dispatch sent Quay County deputies to 4329 Quay Road 49 to respond to multiple 911 calls. They all centered on 77-year-old Aubrey Osteen who allegedly pulled a firearm on his home health care provider and emergency medical personnel.

Deputies spoke to Graham, who NMSP said pulled a firearm and shot one of the deputies. At this point, one deputy fired their weapon and struck Osteen. Osteen died at the scene.

The wounded deputy was transported to a local hospital. Doctors later released him with non-life-threatening injuries.
