Police: 911 call from child leads to suspect dead after police shooting

ROSWELL, N.M. — A 911 call from a child led to gunfire exchanged between Roswell police and a suspect who ended up dead from a gunshot wound.

According to the Roswell Police Department, dispatch received a call around 7:30 a.m. Monday. A child reportedly called from a home on Oak Drive in west Roswell, saying his dad had a gun.

When officers arrived, police said they found 30-year-old Timothy Riley with a gun outside of the home. As Riley reportedly got into a nearby vehicle with children inside, police ordered him to raise his hands.

Instead, police said Riley fired “one or more gunshots” through the back window of the vehicle, toward officers.

Police said an officer fired at Riley as he exited the vehicle and went to the front of the home, which is where they heard another shot from. Then, officers said they saw Riley fall to the ground.

According to police, officers found Riley with a gunshot wound to the head. Medics took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers in the shooting were okay. New Mexico State Police is now investigating the shooting.
