Memorial service held for beloved tattoo shop owner and artist

Memorial held for beloved tattoo shop owner

The community came out in full force to honor and remember John "Bael" Sisneros at a memorial service in downtown Albuquerque, where someone gunned him down at his shop just weeks before.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — People gathered Sunday to remember a beloved tattoo artist who was shot and killed weeks before in his shop.

It was bright and early on a mid-November morning at Por Vida tattoo shop, on the corner of 4th Street and Coal Avenue in downtown Albuquerque. The shop wasn’t even open when police said someone walked in and shot John “Bael” Sisneros, killing him.

Just blocks from where the shooting happened, community members gathered Sunday at the Kiva Auditorium to remember Sisneros as a mentor, an inspiration and a beacon of hope in the arts community – and as a father and loved one.

Colleagues like Julian Mora, the store manager at Por Vida, have big plans to carry on his legacy. Mora said they want to set up a nonprofit – the Bael Sisneros Foundation – to give back to young artists, using money raised for art supplies, workshops and eventually scholarships.
