ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two civilians took down a suspected thief Thursday in Albuquerque’s bosque after the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at them.
“Oh, there’s two people running.”
A Bernalillo County Sheriff’s office helicopter followed two people Thursday around Central and Tingley just after 1 p.m.
“Female is carrying a large, box-shaped item.”
They think the woman is carrying a safe, but they didn’t know why.
“The male is kind of erratic, just running, sprinting back and forth.”
They weren’t sure where they were headed, either.
“Chivalrous of him to have her carry the safe, huh?”
It started the day before, when a man allegedly stole a pop-up trailer.
In a criminal complaint, a business owner said the guy crashed into his fence with a van, hooked up the trailer, and drove off.
According to the complaint, the suspect is Jonathan Aragon. That business owner and another man were able to find him Thursday and says Aragon pointed a gun at him.
Later, one of them even approaches the woman and tries to mace her.
“He just OC’d her. He didn’t get a good hit, though.”
She and Aragon get away and head toward into bosque.
“This is where it’s going to get interesting.”
The two civilians follow – one is on a motorcycle, and the chase causes some kids on a trail to scatter.
“The kids are all running.”
Later, it looks like the two civilians were speaking with Aragon.
“He’s being confronted by two individuals.”
Police say the two kept him pinned until officers got there to arrest him.
“They have him on the ground right now.”
Court documents show Aragon is charged with a felony, assault with a deadly weapon for pointing a gun at the business owner. He’s faced felonies before, including gun crime convictions.
Prosecutors have asked to keep Aragon in jail until trial.
Police say they still haven’t found the woman he was with.
