Santa Fe native Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage competes in Tokyo Olympic Games

SANTA, FE. — Santa Fe native Sabrina Lozada Cabbage is adding something new to her basketball resume — competing in the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Lozada-Cabbage was a state champ at Santa Fe high school, played at Wichita State and in Portugal.

"They called me and I flew out, we played in Canada, so I don’t know how they found me or how they found out that I was Puerto Rican, but they did, and I’m glad they made the call, and I’m happy I took the opportunity,” said Lozada-Cabbage.

Since 2019 she’s played around the world and now, as half Puerto Rican, she’s eligible to play on their national team.

"It’s amazing, you know, it’s a dream come true for sure. Just being here we’ve been here in Japan for almost a month now," said Lozada-Cabbage.

Lozada-Cabbage said she takes a lot of pride in her family heritage.

"I’m not, you know, afraid to represent and say that I’m from New Mexico, I’m from Santa Fe, or that I am Puerto Rican and, you know, to represent my family. My parents are deaf so of course I grew up a little differently than everybody else, so just being proud of everything that I am and everything that I stand for," she said.
