Family of Froylan Villegas testifies in murder trial
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The killing of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas shook our community at its core. A young boy was killed while leaving an Isotopes game in an apparent mistaken identity shooting.
As the trial against two of the three men charged with killing him continues, emotions ran high as family members, including Froylan’s mom, took the stand.
Froylan’s mother took the stand first, talking about that day and how her son wanted to leave the game early because he planned on going to see horse racing the next day.
Understandably, it took her some time to collect herself a few times.
Froylan’s mother was asked to identify who she was with that night at the Isotopes game. It was her niece, Tatiana, who was driving, her son, Froylan, who was in the front passenger seat and herself in the back seat and her 3-month-old son, at the time Pablo, next to her in the car seat.
According to her testimony, she saw a black SUV passing by and shouting at them. Then, she saw a man standing from the sunroof shooting at them.
“Blood was coming out of my son’s head,” said Lorena Villiegas, Froylan’s mother.
Tatiana, her niece who was driving at the time of the shooting, was called up next. She was shot multiple times and found out at the hospital she was paralyzed.
She described what happened from her perspective in the front seat.
“I remember putting my head down and I turn to look, and I see Froy just with his head down. I remember telling my auntie to call the cops because I couldn’t breathe,” said Tatiana. “I remember hearing the lady “there is a dead boy” and my auntie just comes running, hitting him to see if he was awake.”
A few APD offers and two APD detectives also took the stand Tuesday. They described the scene and the evidence collected. There was also surveillance video from inside the Isotopes game and the parking lots outside.
Testimony is set to resume 9 a.m. Wednesday.
