ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A judge sentenced a former Metropolitan Detention Center guard to more jail time after taking a plea deal for running over a man with his truck.

Christopher Facey faced charges of second-degree murder, vehicular homicide and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in the death of Guadalupe Maldonado. According to court records, Facey pleaded guilty to the charge of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident.

According to a criminal complaint, Facey was in his truck with Maldonado’s wife, whom he had allegedly been in an affair with for two-and-a-half years, when investigators said Maldonado and his friend confronted them. Facey then hit Maldonado with his truck as he tried driving away.

Maldonado’s wife and his friend took him to the hospital, where he later died. A day later, police caught up to Facey and arrested him.

“On that night, I feared for my life. My immediate thought process was to get out of there as quickly as possible, and I left. And I beat myself up every day while being incarcerated for not calling 911 and informing them of the situation. At this point in time, I take full responsibility for my actions, and I’m willing to accept whichever consequence you deem is necessary your honor,” Facey said during sentencing Tuesday.

Judge Bruce Fox said he believed the crash was accidental. The judge also acknowledged Facey’s plea before sentencing him to two years in jail. Since Facey has served most of that time already, he will spend less than a year in jail.

Members of Maldonado’s family walked out of the courtroom in protest after the sentencing.

Facey will serve four years of probation after he gets out.
