Good Samaritan takes down bank robber
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Waiting in a bank lobby is normally pretty boring. But what would you do if you witnessed a robbery?
One Albuquerque man who was put in that situation recently wasn’t going to just sit there and watch. Video shows how he took matters into his own hands.
It was supposed to be a typical Friday afternoon in mid-January. Humberto Garcia Rodriguez was sitting in the lobby at the Bank of Montreal near Central and Coors.
That was until this guy walked in and pushed a lady out of the way to talk to the teller. According to court documents, that man is John Martin, and he had just robbed the same bank a month earlier.
Police said he pointed his fingers at the teller in a gun-like fashion and demanded cash.
Meanwhile, this got the attention of Rodriguez, and he had his own ideas.
Video showed him getting behind the suspect and tackling him before he could leave. A total of $2,422 in cash went flying.
The struggle continued but Rodriguez soon had back-up as employees and other bank patrons joined in to keep the suspect down.
A few minutes later, police walked in and took Martin into custody.
Martin is now charged with robbery and added yet another mug shot to a growing gallery of photos related to drug charges, assault, and prostitution charges.
