ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Hundreds of unwanted guns were destroyed Saturday during a new event, “Guns to Gardens.”
The event was a no questions asked buyback for pistols, long guns and illegally altered firearms.
“We have never seen this many guns come in,” said Miranda Viscoli with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence.
Gary Coffin with the Bernalillo County District’s Attorney’s office was also surprised with the turnout.
“It is overwhelming. I mean, the community is definitely responding to the reality we want to get guns out of the community,” said Coffin.
Each person who turned in a firearm was given a choice of a $250 gift card per gun.
New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence say they will have another one of these events next month in Santa Fe.
