Lawmaker proposes bill to crackdown on repeat car thieves

Is this the session when lawmakers finally tackle the major problems with our criminal justice system?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Is this the session when lawmakers finally tackle the major problems with our criminal justice system?

This Legislature looks different, but there are a lot of similar faces in different seats. One of them wants to crack down on repeat car thieves.

KOB 4 is following House Bill 50 that would change penalties for auto theft.

“I think that we’re going to, even Democrats, are going to see us maybe move the needle a little bit. Because that’s what the public is asking for,” said state Rep. Cynthia Borrego.

The idea is combining alleged offenses to make the punishment more severe.

Borrego sponsors the bill. She has some family in the car sales business and says there is a need to crack down on repeat car thieves.

“The idea is that stiffer penalties will deter criminals, but of course we all know that criminals don’t care. But I think what it does is it sends a message to the criminals that this particular crime, you really need to think about what you’re doing,” said Borrego.
