Police search for man accused of crashing car into National Hispanic Cultural Center

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police say an intentional car crash caused at least half a million dollars of damage at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The suspected driver is facing charges, but right now, police don’t know where he is.
Police say 24-year-old Victor Barreto is not in custody, even though first responders took him to the hospital after the crash. KOB 4 learned he was released from the hospital before they were able to bring charges against him for aggravated battery against a household member, criminal damage to property, and reckless driving.
While Albuquerque police continue to search for him, officials at the NHCC are picking up the pieces and still assessing the damage. The site of the crash is still blocked off by yellow tape.
Police say Barreto purposely crashed into the center and he did not slow down wen he hit the curb on the property. His girlfriend, who was in the car with him, said she feared he wanted to kill them both.
Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the crash.
Police say Barreto’s girlfriend was also discharged from the hospital shortly after she spoke to police, and they don’t know where she is either.
