ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — There is finally justice for a local family that lost a loved one trying to save a teenage girl.
33-year-old Leo Jaquez died after getting shot outside a Papa John’s near UNM. Police say Donovin Santiago, who was 17 at the time, shot him after Jaquez tried to stop the teen from choking his girlfriend.
Santiago pleaded guilty to first-degree murder weeks ago.
Judge Jennifer Wernersbach sentenced Santiago Thursday, but not before there was talk of Santiago’s drug use on that tragic night.
Jaquez’s mother listened as Santiago took responsibility for killing her son.
With that, Wernersbach sentenced Santiago to 15 years, with four years suspended.
