MDC reports recent inmate death

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. — Bernalillo County confirmed an inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center died after being treated at UNM Hospital.

The county identified the inmate as 54-year-old Zeora Hercey. According to the county, Hercey began showing flu-like symptoms Monday. They placed him under medical observation and care for around two hours until UNMH staff told MDC to take Hercey to the hospital.

First responders took Hercey to UNMH.

“Despite rigorous life-saving efforts, a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) inmate died after being treated at UNM Hospital,” the county stated.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death. MDC and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation, “in accordance with standard operating procedure.”
