NMSP: Texas man killed in head-on crash near Carlsbad

LEA COUNTY, N.M. — A 45-year-old Texas man was killed in a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon east of Carlsbad.

45-year-old Earl Burton, of Woodlands, Texas, was killed when his Nissan crashed head-on with a Chevrolet truck.

New Mexico State Police says the Nissan was traveling eastbound on westbound U.S. Highway 62/180, near mile marker 63, when it crashed head-on into the Chevrolet just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Burton was pronounced dead at the scene. The 46-year-old man driving the Chevrolet was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

State Police indicated seatbelts were properly used but that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. An investigation is still ongoing.
