Pay It 4ward: Red Cross volunteer honored for over 30 years of service
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It’s hard to realize the significance of a helping hand during a crisis until you’re in the middle of one. But a smiling face and a strong shoulder can change everything in a moment.
Tonight’s Pay It 4ward helps a man who has been – and continues to be – that shoulder for countless people across New Mexico.
“There’s a lot of giving and kindness in the City of Albuquerque and Lewis Casey is just a good exhibitor of that,” said Patrick Murphy, Pay It 4ward nominator.
Casey has been volunteering with the American Red Cross since the 90s. Murphy has called him a friend for just about as long. They started as co-workers.
“We formed a bond so strong, and we just kept in touch,” said Murphy.
Casey moved on to a city job, and Murphy’s respect for his friend only grew over the years.
“He’s taken that compassion and empathy and over 30 years he’s helped folks here in Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque,” Murphy said. “Ever since he retired from the city he seems to be busier, so he’s full of energy, very energetic guy.”
Murphy thought it was about time all of that volunteer work got rewarded. So, it was time to Pay It 4ward with $400.
