The officer said the suspect was pointing a gun at them and refused to put it down, prompting the officer to fire at the suspect.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A person is in custody after allegedly pointing a BB gun at a police officer, prompting the officer to shoot at them Thursday near Central and Mesilla.

An officer said he was talking to the person when a bag of narcotics allegedly fell out of their pocket. The officer informed the person he’d have to arrest them, which is when they took off running.

As he was running, the person allegedly pointed a BB gun at the officer. The officer told the person to drop it as they ran into a residential area. Then, the officer fired multiple shots.

The officer missed and the person got away. However, police caught up to the person and took them into custody.

The officer who fired the shots is on standard administrative leave.
