RISD launches new app to report safety concerns
ROSWELL, N.M. — The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer responded to Berrendo Middle School after they were notified that a student was intoxicated, non-compliant, and acting aggressively toward staff.
Chaves County Undersheriff Charles Yslas says it happened sometime after 11 a.m. Thursday morning.
“He became combative when the school resource officer approached him. so at that time, a struggle ensued,” said Yslas.
The student was detained and fortunately, no one was injured.
Although there were no threats to any students in this incident, Roswell Independent School District is aiming to do more to ensure student safety at all times.
The school district is implementing a new resource, that students, teachers, and the community can use to submit safety concerns through an app called P3 Campus.
When you open the app, you can select schools from elementary to high school. Then, find a category and submit an anonymous concern and who it regards.
The undersheriff says they don’t ever anticipate having to respond to incidents at schools but says you never really know what could happen.
“We can go we can go weeks, or months without having an incident, and for whatever reason, we might respond a couple of times in a week, maybe sometimes twice or two or three times in a day. So it really fluctuates. I think it’s – there is no pattern to it,” Yslas said.
The student in yesterday’s incident could face charges.
“He could face minor allowing himself to be served the alcohol if the alcohol was located in his backpack or his locker. He could be charged with minor possession of alcohol as well as resisting evading an officer,” Yslas said.
