Protest against Trump administration held outside New Mexico state capitol
SANTA FE, N.M. – On Wednesday at the Roundhouse, protesters gathered in solidarity to express their disdain with the early actions of President Donald Trump and his administration.
The demonstrations were a part of a larger, nationwide 50-50-1 movement. 50-50-1 stands for 50 protests in 50 states on one day.
“If we don’t stand up who is going to?” one protester said Wednesday. “We’ve always been a democracy but maybe not much longer, I don’t know and I think a lot of people here are angry and a little bit frightened.”
Many protesters say Trump’s actions reflect the much-talked-about Project 2025. They say something needs to be done, especially about Elon Musk and his role in the administration.
“The fact that Elon Musk seems to be taking over everything, he’s in the Treasury Department, he’s got the keys to the kingdom if you believe what you read,” a protester said.
Musk led to an intense moment during a House Oversight Committee hearing when New Mexico U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury spoke out as committee leaders moved to table a motion to subpoena him.
“I think it’s outrageous that this committee will not even entertain he’s breaking the law and dismantling our federal agencies and firing federal employees, hacking personal data and you will not even entertain a motion to bring him in front of the oversight committee,” Rep. Stansbury said.
The motion was introduced in an effort to understand what he and his Department Of Government Efficiency are doing with federal computer systems.
The motion failed in a 20-19 vote.
