IRS tax identity pin | What the Tech?

You want to get your tax return, not a scammer, so here is a way to protect that.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WHAT THE TECH?) — The Internal Revenue Service says, in 2023, scammers stole over $5.5 billion off of tax scams – but there’s a simple way to protect yourself.

The IRS encourages everyone to apply for a Tax Identity Pin. It’s a unique set of 6 numbers that will be required when filing a tax return. The PIN is only known by you, the IRS and, if you don’t file the tax return yourself, your tax professional.

The PIN is good for just one tax season and you’ll get a different number next year. To get your PIN, you’ll need an online account with the IRS which you can register for at IRS.gov. It’s a secure service.

When you request a Tax Identity Pin, you’ll get it right away. You can select “continuous enrollment” so you won’t have to request a new PIN every year. Print it out or write it down and keep in a safe place.

You can also get the number by logging into your account. You’ll share it with your tax preparer.

It’s especially important to request a Tax Identity Pin this year because over a 100 million people had their Social Security numbers exposed in a massive data breach last year.
