APD: 7 teens arrested in deadly attempted robbery shooting
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police released details on a shooting that left one person dead and seven teens behind bars early Wednesday morning.
Police say a 14 year old died in the shooting but believe it may be a justified shooting. It all happened Wednesday, Jan. 29. when homicide detectives say a group of teens attempted to rob a couple as they drove into The Ridge apartments, near Copper Avenue and Tramway Boulevard NE.
According to police, the teens were in a white car that approached a husband and wife in their blue Jeep. The victims said a teen, later identified as 14-year-old Alonzo Sanderson, pulled out two guns and aimed them at the passenger side of the vehicle. Then, police allege 15-year-old Jeriah Salas got into the back seat of the Jeep, armed with a gun.
At some point, a shot rang out. Then, a full-on shootout erupted between the driver and the two teens. Sanderson was struck, as was the driver’s wife.
One of the teens tried to jump in the car and fight the driver. However, he pushed her out and rammed into the teens’ car before driving off.
Upon realizing his wife had been shot twice, the driver took her to the hospital. Her injuries were non-life-threatening and she was later released.
Some of the teens drove Sanderson to the hospital where he later died. The teens allegedly told detectives one of the girls may have also been shot. That girl left separately with another boy.
On Thursday, 15-year-old Janiyah Pinto showed up to a local hospital for a bullet graze wound and was taken into custody. 13-year-old Levis Salas also turned himself into police Thursday.
Police arrested and charged Salas with attempt to commit an armed robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at a motor vehicle and conspiracy.
Police arrested 16-year-old Jocelyn Sedillo, 14-year-old Elijah Gutierrez, 15-year-old Jeriah Salas, 12-year-old Jonathan Gutierrez, 17-year-old Vicente Pino, 15-year-old Janiyah Pino and 13-year-old Levis Salas.
Salas, Jonathan Gutierrez, Elijah Gutierrez and Pino will all stay behind bars.
The other teens will appear in court Feb. 11 to see if they will stay behind bars until they go on trial.
