APD: 1 in custody, other suspects not found for shooting at officers

Police identified a man arrested in the alleged case of someone shooting at officers from a vehicle that drove away from a traffic stop.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police identified a man arrested in the alleged case of someone shooting at officers from a vehicle that drove away from a traffic stop.

Around 3:54 a.m. Monday, an officer said they pulled over a white Acura with no license plate at Tennessee and Trumbull. Less than two minutes later, police allege a passenger fired “several gunshots” at officers as the car drove westbound on Trumbull.

According to police, the car reached the Wells Fargo bank at San Mateo and Zuni. At that point, four people reportedly exited the car and ran off.

After closing off an area in the east and west vicinity of the intersection and telling residents to stay inside, police said they arrested 35-year-old Joeray Newson without force. After his arrest, Newson went to the hospital to address what police described as medical complaints.

Newson faces charges of felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated assault on an officer, resisting or evading, tampering with evidence, criminal damage and concealing identity. According to police, he was also on federal probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

No officers were struck by gunfire. One officer suffered a minor laceration as a result of a crash during the incident.

Police said investigators found two guns while collecting evidence at the scene. However, they haven’t found the other alleged suspects.
