Aztec Schools back on track for classes to restart

AZTEC N.M. – For five days now, the halls of Aztec Municipal Schools have been empty because of a network interruption.

The district wants parents and teachers to know… they are doing all they can to fix it.

Hayley Lewis, the district’s public information officer said, “We understand that this is incredibly confusing, and we appreciate all the patience that all the Aztec school parents have given us. We are working with third-party it professionals to try and get our network back on so that all the doors are working, all the cameras are working, all student contact information is available until we can bring the kids back.”

District leaders learned about the problem on Monday and notified parents there would be no school.

“That took out all of our abilities to have safety protocol, to have the ability to do anything that worked via the internet, and so because of the most, most of it was because of the safety issues, we wanted to make sure that we had kids not in school this week,” said Lewis.

By Wednesday, the district handed out work packets to students.

“New Mexico Public Education Department said that those would count since we cannot do virtual classes because our network is down, that paper packets would work in this instant to count attendance, and that way that we don’t have to extend school later on in the year,” said Lewis.

The plan is to have the kids back in class on Monday. If that doesn’t happen, the district will keep parents informed and will be following the state/federal guidelines necessary.
