Cellphone-free school bill advances through committee
The bill would allocate $10 million to the New Mexico Public Education Department to encourage schools to discourage phone use.
SANTA FE, N.M. — A bill to encourage New Mexico schools to be cellphone-free is one step closer to becoming law.
New Mexico Senate Bill 11 advanced through the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday. It would give $10 million to the New Mexico Public Education Department to encourage cellphone-free schools.
Districts who choose to take part would be reimbursed for physically limiting their students’ access to phones, such as using pouches and locks.
The bill is now heading to the Senate Finance Committee.
