Deb Haaland to run for New Mexico governor

The former Secretary of the Interior and U.S. representative formally launched her campaign Tuesday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Democrat Deb Haaland has formally launched her campaign to run for governor in New Mexico.

Haaland made the announcement Tuesday in a launch video focused on the cost of living, public safety and emphasizing what the campaign describes as “the importance of listening to communities in New Mexico.”

Haaland served as Secretary of the Interior under former President Joe Biden after she was confirmed in 2021. Before that, voters in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District elected her to two terms to represent them in Congress.

A member of the Laguna Pueblo and a graduate of the University of New Mexico and Highland High School in Albuquerque, Haaland also served as chair of the state’s Democratic Party.

Haaland stated last month she expected to run for governor. She is looking to succeed Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is ineligible to run for a third consecutive term in 2026 but could run again in 2030.

The governor issued the following statement on Haaland’s 2026 campaign launch:

“Deb Haaland’s long record of service to New Mexico and the nation makes her a formidable candidate for governor and clear front-runner early in the 2026 race. I congratulate Deb on her announcement today, and I look forward to following the race as additional candidates throw their hats in the ring.”

Haaland is the first candidate to formally announce their candidacy for the 2026 gubernatorial race in New Mexico. U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich stated he won’t run, in response to rumors about his possible candidacy.
