Former paralegal allowed to leave country ahead of sentencing

Rick Mendez pleaded guilty to his role in a DWI scheme involving law enforcement and now he can leave the country, if he wishes to.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One of the admitted organizers of the DWI bribery scheme involving local law enforcement wants to leave the country – and now can.

Rick Mendez was the paralegal for local defense attorney Thomas Clear III. Mendez and Clear took plea deals in a federal investigation and admitted to bribing law enforcement in order to get their clients’ DWI cases dismissed.

Mendez asked a judge to leave the country for a trip and court documents show it was approved. All other details about the trip are sealed.

Mendez is awaiting sentencing in the case. The court hasn’t scheduled the sentencing.
