Former WNMU president wants lawsuit dismissed

New Mexico's attorney general filed a lawsuit to cancel a contract the university president received as a part of a severance package over lavish spending.

SILVER CITY, N.M. — The former president of Western New Mexico University wants the lawsuit over his $1.9 million payout dismissed.

Joseph Shepard resigned from his role as university president after a state audit showed he was using university funds for lavish travel and perks.

However, other parts of the severance package also allowed Shepard to remain on staff with a $200,000 salary. New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez filed a lawsuit to cancel that contract. In the motion to dismiss the lawsuit, Shepard accused him of overreach.
