Report: Border Patrol harasses Las Cruces students on bus

According to reports, the bus driver didn't speak Spanish and coaches had to step in to tell agents what was going on.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection reportedly boarded a bus and questioned a group of Las Cruces high school students traveling to a swim meet.

The student-athletes were going to Albuquerque on Friday when reports indicate U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents questioned the driver. However, the driver didn’t speak English.

According to witnesses, instead of de-escalating the situation, an agent boarded the bus. The reports indicate the agent ignored coaches and demanded information about the students as the coaches tried to explain what was going on.

The American Federation of Teachers New Mexico union released a statement about the situation saying:

“As educators, the chilling effects of actions such as these are detrimental to the wellbeing of our student population, their families, and our larger community. Under no circumstance should students be harassed, intimidated or frightened by federal agents, either while in school or while participating in school activities.”

U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez will address the situation Monday.
