Livelihood stolen from woman in home break-in
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A matter of minutes was all it took for someone to upend what one woman has loved to do since she was in high school.
Kelli Johansen is a nurse who has a photography business on the side.
“This is part of something that I love to do and it adds to my income. I’m a single mom, I do what I have to do to make sure my daughter and myself are well taken care of,” Johansen said.
Last week, Johansen said she walked into her home and found it full of smoke. Someone broke into her home and left a hockey bag on top of a heater.
As it turns out, Johansen said that person stole nearly $8,000 worth of photography equipment.
“It’s something that brings me joy and brings me peace that, right now, feels like it’s a little disheveled and unsettled,” she said.
The alleged thieves took much more too.
“I could see the things that they took. They took a lot of my equipment for photography. Most of it that was a huge hit. Then, I noticed they had taken stuff that my dad had given me and my dad passed away… and I’m never going to get that stuff back. On top of [that,] photos of my daughter that were on hard drives. I’m never going to get that back,” she said.
Johansen said they also took most of her legal documents and her Mac computer. She said they pinged the location of it and tracked it to an apartment complex.
“They went to the apartment building and, instead of knocking on the door and just asking questions, they asked him if they had a MAC computer, which kind of gave away what they were there for. And there’s been no follow up,” she said.
Johansen said while she was expecting from Albuquerque police, she wondered how the alleged thieves got in. She said officers had a theory that they entered through the back door but that wasn’t the case.
“I had gone outside to get some air. I noticed that one of my pieces of my patio furniture pieces was missing and I was like, ‘there is no way they carried that’ or put that in a vehicle. So I did a walk around my house and I noticed that they actually went in my window. They had gotten in through my bedroom window,” she said.
Johansen said it’s unsettling to know someone went through every inch of her home – and still doesn’t have answers.
“I don’t feel safe anymore. And that’s not fair. This is my house,” she said.
Johansen said this is the second time someone broke into her home.
We reached out to APD for an update on the case and haven’t heard back yet.
