Pet owners in limbo after microchip company goes dark

The company going away could mean the difference between you finding your pet and not.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Microchips play a big role in finding your pets but a microchip company has gone dark, leaving pet owners in limbo.

“Save This Life” seemingly went dark with no announcement. We tried the number on their website several times but it never went through, not even to voicemail. All other attempts to reach out didn’t go through either.

What could this mean for people whose pets have this microchip?

“Any pet with a Save This Life microchip implanted, if they were picked up and scanned, the microchip number would come up but there’s nobody to call to get the registered guardian’s information,” said Angela Stell, the founder and director of NMDOG.

What should you do? If you don’t know what company your pet’s microchip is under, check your adoption or rescue forms. Those forms have it on there.

If not, see a veterinarian. They can scan it and check it for you.

If your pet is microchipped under Save This Life, you’ll need to re-register your pet’s chip with a new company. You don’t need to get them chipped again.

Stell says getting your pet microchipped is as essential as getting them vaccinated, spayed and neutered. It’s also important to keep up with the information you put down. If there isn’t current information, there is no way to bring your pet back to you.

Stell says Pet Link is offering a $4.99 promotion for anyone who has a Save This Life microchip and are looking to re-register. You can use the code “STL499” at this link.
