NMSP: Suspect arrested for murder in Socorro
SOCORRO, N.M. — A man turned himself in hours after shooting and killing someone Friday in Socorro, according to New Mexico State Police.
NMSP investigators said the shooting happened around 8 p.m. Friday. Investigators allege in a criminal complaint that 24-year-old Jonathan Gonzales was sitting in the backseat of a Dodge Charger when 26-year-old Christopher Brannan allegedly smashed a window, shot him in the chest and drove away.
Paramedics responded and took Gonzales to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Investigators allege Brannan called a Socorro police officer and said, “I shot. I don’t know if I hit him,” claiming it was self-defense. They also allege that officer encouraged Brannan to turn himself in, which he later did.
Authorities booked Brannan into the Socorro County Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder.
NMSP is still investigating.
