Police: Auto theft is down 44% in last 7 years

According to the Albuquerque Police Department, cases of auto theft are continuing to go down after spiking right after the pandemic.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Cases of auto theft in Albuquerque were down again in 2024, according to data from the Real-Time Crime Center.

The Albuquerque Police Department released data Wednesday, showing there were 5,776 cases of auto theft in the city in 2024. While that is still up from immediately before the pandemic – 5,613 cases in 2019 – cases have been in decline since a spike after the pandemic.

Auto theft cases are also down 44% from 2017 when there were 10,350 cases in the city. Back then, Albuquerque used to lead the U.S. in auto theft. Now, the city ranks seventh.

Police believe cases will drop even more as car security technology becomes more advanced.
