Accidental release to raise Rio Grande water levels

Water levels are expected to rise up to six feet by midnight.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A “procedural error” led to what the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Albuquerque describes as an unplanned water release from Cochiti Dam.

The release happened Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. due to an error during routine maintenance. The error is under internal review.

The release from the dam was around 8,000 cubic feet per second – but the dam is functioning properly and isn’t compromised.

According to the USACE, no flooding impacts have been observed. They’re asking you to avoid the area around the Rio Grande between now and Wednesday at 8 p.m.

USACE personnel are inspecting the channel to assess risk and gather more information.
