Resources offered as domestic violence increases in Sandoval County

For the past few years, domestic violence has been on the rise in New Mexico, sadly Sandoval County is not immune.

SANDOVAL COUNTY, N.M. – For the past few years, domestic violence has been on the rise in New Mexico, sadly Sandoval County is not immune.

“2024 was a year that did stand out as it pertains to domestic violence related homicides,” said Rio Rancho Police Department Capt. Jacquelynn Reedy.

Aside from the department’s crisis intervention training, they also have a crime victims’ assistance unit. They help people on scene with everything from financial help to a place to stay.

“If you are dealing or in a household that is struggling with any type of violence to try to get help early before these things have a tendency of escalating,” said Reedy.

“In Sandoval County, which is the county you were talking about specifically, we have two providers, Haven House and the Pueblo of Zuni who provide services in that community, and they are often at capacity or full,” said MaryEllen Garcia, chief executive officer of the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

With beds often full, it leaves a gap in service that providers have to juggle to fill. That’s why New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence is asking lawmakers to increase their budget by $10 million to distribute across the state.

“When we adequately resource our communities, when we ensure that our shelters and our crisis centers are adequately resourced, when we adequately resource our law enforcement and our criminal justice system and our courts,” said Garcia.

RRPD’s Crime Victims Assistance Unit also works with the Sandoval County Collaboration Unit to help people get protective orders.

“We are definitely trying to do everything we can as a city and as a department to mitigate some of the issues we are seeing in the City of Rio Rancho,” said Reedy.
