Snowdown brings an annual boost to Durango businesses
DURANGO, CO. — The 2025 Snowdown is underway. Anyone ready to come out and play is invited because this year’s theme is board games.
“Snowdown has really grown over the years, the whole town really gets involved,” said Cathy Wakeman, owner of Animas Trading Co.
“Covid really put a hamper on Snowdown, but it has certainly rebounded back,” said Joe Thompson, owner of Magpies Newsstand and Cafe.
“Now it stretches for two weekends, which is a real marathon of a party,” said Evam Shertz, owner of Maria’s Book Shop.
The marathon comes with a reward for business owners in historic downtown Durango.
“A lot of businesses support different activities, which just brings us together as a whole,” Thompson said.
“You really see the spirit of Durango happening and everybody getting involved,” Wakeman said.
“It’s a time for everyone to celebrate what makes Durango special, which is really the whole community here,” Shertz said.
They all contribute to the event in one way or another.
“Help get the word out to the community, spread the cheer. It’s a lot of fun, the themes for each year,” Thompson said.
“We supply costumes and accessories for all the events for the annual themes,” Wakeman said.
It also helps businesses keep afloat during their “off-season.”
“We definitely see a little more foot traffic,” Thompson said.
“There are folks out every single afternoon, taking off events through town and stopping in,” Shertz said.
“There’s definitely a great boost of sales,” Wakeman said.
With more than 15 events daily, everyone is sure to find something they like.
“There’s a calendar of hundreds of events and just grab one,” Shertz said. “Every single one is fun and weird.”
