New Mexico State Police shoot and kill man during traffic stop in Hobbs
HOBBS, N.M. — New Mexico State Police shot and killed a man during a traffic stop Monday night in Hobbs, according to the chief.
NMSP Chief Troy Weisler gave a briefing early Tuesday morning on a shooting near East Marland Boulevard and South Fowler Street in Hobbs. Weisler said NMSP officers pulled a white Dodge Charger over there just after 6 p.m.
“Shortly after this stop was initiated, an incident occurred and two officers fired their duty weapons, resulting in the death of Jesus Rubio,” Weisler said.
In a press release issued Tuesday afternoon, NMSP stated Rubio ignored officers’ commands to stay in the vehicle, instead exiting his vehicle and raising his arms in a firing stance as he walked toward them. That is when officers opened fire on Rubio.
Paramedics responded and took Rubio to the hospital where he died. No officers were injured, according to an initial social media post on the incident.
NMSP is still investigating the shooting.
